banana boat song and antiperspirant

When I started learning German, I learned the words for some common household items.  One of those words was deodorant.  That’s das Deodorant auf Deutsch.  Easy, right?

But that’s kind of a long word to say for such a common item.  In Germany, Deodorant can be abbreviated as Deo.

The chorus of the Banana Boat Song, which (thanks, Wikipedia!) was released in 1956, gets stuck in my head sometimes.  The chorus is:

Day-o, we say day-o

Daylight come and me wan’ go home.

The German word Deo is pronounced Day-o.

With that in mind, I have no idea what the chorus of that song means.  Anyone have any ideas?
