schöne brunnen

I went to Nürnberg on Dec. 11, 2011 to visit the Christkindlesmarkt.  It was a beautiful Weihnachtsmarkt, and I loved how the city’s other treasures were integrated into the rest of the festivities and decor.  the schöne brunnen in nürnberg, next to a long row of christkindlesmarkt stalls

The schöne Brunnen (English translation: beautiful well) was at the end of one of the rows of vendor stalls.  It was a popular attraction.

There is a brass ring held in the wrought iron fence around the well that can turn freely. (Didn’t get a picture of the ring, unfortunately.) The website given says that the legend goes that if a woman wants to have a baby but is barren, she just has to turn the brass ring and she will soon have a baby on the way.

I didn’t know the legend when I saw the well at the time, but I at least know part of the reason why there were so many people waiting in line to turn the ring.  But there were men waiting in line to turn the ring as well.  Puzzling.  Does anyone know whether the ring in the schöne Brunnen has a general good-luck legend associated with it?
